68 Hats Podcast Interview: with Chris Nicholas from Sumwot

Chris Nicholas, the founder of Sumwot, recently appeared on the 68 Hats podcast to discuss the importance of Google My Business for businesses of all sizes. Chris was joined by Pete Avery and Jodie Newman, who host the 68 Hats podcast. The podcast aims to help small business owners with insightful and inspirational content.

As you will know, Google My Business is a free and easy-to-use tool for businesses and organisations to manage their online presence across Google, including Search and Maps. By verifying and editing your business information, you can help customers find you and tell them the story of your business.

According to Google, 97% of consumers search for local businesses online, and 46% of all Google searches are seeking local information. So if you're not visible in Google Maps and Organic Search, you're missing out on a huge opportunity to attract new customers.

In the 20 minute podcast, Sumwot discusses why Google My Business is so important to all businesses.

Chris also mentions one of his favourite graphic designers and branding experts Mr John McCarthy of JMC3 (in fact, John used to be Chris's boss).

3 Bonus Tips not mentioned on the podcast that could help with your Google Business Profile

Bonus Tip 1 - Google Business Profile - Attributes

One of the features of Google My Business is Attributes. Attributes are a way of providing additional information about your business to potential customers. This might include whether you are Family-friendly, have an onsite bar or are wheelchair accessible.

Including appropriate Attributes can help your business to stand out in organic search results. Google users often use the search engine to find businesses that meet their specific needs.

For example, someone searching for a restaurant with outdoor seating is likely to choose one with this information included in their Google My Business listing. Including relevant Attributes can help you attract customers looking for businesses like yours.

Bonus tip 2 - Google Business Profile - High-Quality Images

If you're looking to improve your Google Business Profile, one thing you can do is add high-quality images. High-quality images will show Google that your business is active, and they'll also help demonstrate what you do. A word of warning, though - don't use images from image libraries as Google can penalise you for this. So make sure you use your images or ones you have permission to use.

With the right images, your Google Business Profile will be more engaging and informative, helping potential customers to learn more about your business.

Bonus tip 3 - Google Business Profile - Replying to reviews

It's essential to reply to your Google reviews, both good and bad. By doing so, you show that you're listening to feedback from your customers. You can also get your keywords into the replies, which can be helpful for SEO purposes. However, it's important not to go overboard with keywords, as this can come across as artificial and could turn off potential customers. Instead, focus on providing natural, informative responses that address customer concerns. This will show that you're invested in providing a positive experience for all of your customers.
